Here’s the blouse I made my daughter with cotton fine from yarn gallery
this summer. I got finished in time for her to wear it to school on one
warm day.

I Want What He’s Having

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

Gosh, have you seen all the projects that Dave Ritz finished recently?  When does this guy sleep?  I’m ashamed – I do this for a living, and I can’t match him at all! Is there some magic ingredient in hair products that allows a person to knit in his sleep, grow two more hands, knit with his feet?  How does he do it?  And don’t you love that gorgeous afghan he made?  And the adult surprise jacket – how cool!

I’m slogging along on a couple of things, but I feel like the tortoise vs. the hare.  I just finished a nice sweater in charcoal gray Merino Superlight from Schulana, a chunky but incredibly lightweight chained merino yarn. It’s being blocked and I’ll try to find someone to model it this week. The style is great for a young woman, with an open neckline, ribbed yoke and flared bodice, and quick to make.  Still chugging along on my silk shawl, finished a couple little things, but I guess the humid weather kept my enthusiasm for big projects down.  A couple cool nights and now the prospect of new sweaters is sooo enticing! I did finish one thing that I love, from Noro’s new Catwalk collection.  It’s shown in Silk Garden in the book, but as usual, they’re shipping Silk Garden by the ounce, so there’s not enough to knit with yet.  No problemo – I did it in Louisa Harding’s lovely Castello:

Lucky for me, the weather didn’t seem to be deterring you all from wanting to start new projects. The shop was buzzing all week long, and oh, my gosh, we got in the most beautiful yarns.

This is just a big old box of fun from Fleece Artist and Handmaiden Yarns:

Seawool and Mini Maiden are in stock again in beautiful new colors, and I ordered a smattering of their new yarns as well, just to see what they’re like.  (They don’t show at TNNA, nor do they have a sales rep in this area, so what’s a girl to do if she’s addicted to these wonderful yarns and colors?) I especially love Somoku, a merino/kid mohair/silk/nylon blend in a sport weight, that absolutely glows from within.  Good for socks, I’m sure, but I can’t stop touching it and thinking that it should be for more than feet!  Their worsted weight version of the same fibers (the two big skeins at the bottom of the photo) is called Marina, and it’s just as gorgeous, great for a luscious pair of mittens, a hat or neckwarmer.  The one thing I’m still waiting for is their newest sock yarn called Casbah – merino, cashmere and nylon – can’t wait.  I want more of everything, but I have to be practical – all the yarn is a little pricey and the freight is crazy from Canada, so …

THIS is the Noro yarn I’ve been waiting for, called Yuzen.  It’s wool, silk, mohair and the color changes are beautifully tweedy and blended.

The yarn is quite lovely and sophisticated for Noro and there are some wonderful designs, including a beautiful lightweight sweater-coat that I would just love to have but probably won’t have time to make.  (David, umm, are you busy?)

Other shipments just arrived:  New colors in Rowan classics – Kid Silk Haze, Kid Classic, Cashsoft DK, and Big Wool, and the newest Rowan book is totally gorgeous with a vintage section that makes you want to pull out tiny needles and knit on fingering weight for the rest of your life.  Ella Rae Lace Merino – hand-dyed fingering weight merino in absolutely beautiful colorways. Ty-Dy Socks from Knit One, Crochet Too in their great Ty-Dy colors but in a superwash wool and nylon blend perfect for socks (or a Baby Surprise!), plus Babyboo in some grown-up colors for those of you who can’t wear wool or have very cosmopolitan babies.  New colors in Tibet from Aurora Yarns, a pretty and very nicely priced wool/acrylic tweed, and machine washable, too.  Adagio from the skacel Primera Collection, a soft and glowing wool/silk blend.  Either I’ve gone completely bonkers for wool and silk blends, or there are a million beautiful options out there (and I bought every one of them.)  Bulky Murano, a self-striping chunky wool in amazing color combinations for huge, soft scarves.  Oh, my word, what a week!

You have got to touch, feel, see – come in soon!
