Pitchers and everything

Tuesday, May 25th, 2010

Yippee! I can upload pictures again, but first, if you missed the post from last week, be sure to update your bookmarks/RSS feed and any other preset for the blog from http://blog.yarngal.com to http://www.yarngal.com/blog.

The MadelineTosh has arrived and the afghan gals snagged a bunch of it.  I’ll have to reorder right away because I was at the store this morning (ordering fall yarn – gosh, so fabulous!) and saw that the carton was half-empty.  Still some wonderful things in there and I’ve got my eye on a skein of Tosh Sock that absolutely rocks.

Reminder: The shop will be closed on Sunday, May 30.

Let’s catch up with some older photos:

This is the Springtime Bandit shawl that I mentioned several weeks ago, a free pattern on Kelbournewoolens.com.  It’s pretty, fun, quick, and frankly, mine looks better than theirs, probably because of the blocking.  It’s a good pattern.

This is my Let’s dance a fandango! version of the Horizontal Feather and Fan shawl, a pattern that Janet teaches in her beginner lace class.  I used Noro’s Furin and inserted a few rows of Trendsetter’s Cha-Cha, and it’s just plain fun.  Fran Krieger is doing a beautiful version in off-white, very, very pretty.

Here are some photos that might get you into a class this summer.  First is Yuko Lewandoski’s version of the Adult Surprise Jacket.  The colors are bright but overall the effect is tailored and elegant.

This is Janet’s version of the shrug she’s teaching in her Mother-Daughter Design a Shrug class.  It’s too cute in a combo of Jelli-beenz and Fizz:

And here is the toe-up sock in progress, from Karen Walter’s class this summer.  It may be finished this week – it’s sort of like a striptease, every time I see her she shows a little bit more!  (This week she was in to raid the MadTosh before anyone else got their paws on it.)

Carol Whitcraft is knitting like a madwoman for her first great-grandchild.  Look at the beautiful blanket and this perfect little sweater in Jeannee, a soft cotton/acrylic blend.

And Karen Shearer’s granddaughter came in in her Baby Surprise, and even though we’ve shown her before, I had to take her picture again.  You can see why, can’t you?  Do you love the little pants or what?

Anne Nordhoy is an A-one knitter who knits like the wind and does the most intricate colorwork as naturally as you and I breathe.  She and her husband host an auction and fundraiser for the Y every year, and she knits many beautiful treasures to auction off.  Here are a sampling of what she’s offering this year.  They’re just too remarkable to remark on:

A Trio of Christmas Stockings

Thumb Detail (a boy and girl) of a Pair of Mittens

A Multi-Stitch Baby Blanket

A Multi-Stitch Baby Blanket

Christening Gown and Bonnet

Delicate Lace Shawl

A Child's Ski Sweater

Child's Sweater

See what I mean?  It takes your breath away!

Enough for one day… see you soon!

Back in the Saddle…

Saturday, May 22nd, 2010

I don’t know where to start!  One of the good things about posting to a blog every week is that there isn’t that much to say.  First things first, this is important:

The blog address has changed from http://blog.yarngal.com to http://www.yarngal.com/blog.  If you have a bookmark in your web browser for the old address, you need to change it to the new one.  If you have a feed reader for the blog, you need to update it to the new address.  If you reach us by clicking on the blog button at yarngal.com, you don’t need to do a thing!

Janelle at Design Revolution did a quick and efficient update so I can’t blame her for the lack of posts.  I’ve been trying to get my new netbook (a cute little computer) to work with my camera and other things, and I’ve been stubbornly refusing to do anything on my old computer.  Unfortunately, everything except the new computer is old, including hardware and software and nothing really works together, so I need some more new stuff to make it work.  What I really want to be able to do is post directly from the shop maybe more than once a week so that things are more immediate and each post is not like one of those dreadful Christmas letters you get from people whose names you no longer recognize. (“We’re so proud of Jim Junior, who despite his severe lack of brain cells and personality, was promoted to vice president of XYZ Corporation last summer.  His beautiful wife Lucretia still makes time for their three rambunctious yet adorable children despite her dedication to being a role model for other aging beauty queens.  Her most recent plastic surgery went well and the odd tilt to the right side of her face seems to be less of a problem now that the left side has been tilted as well, which you can see from the family photo enclosed.  That’s Lucretia in the middle, not a giant pit viper…”)

We got a partial shipment of Madeline Tosh – it’s very lovely, except for one color that I must have been insane to order, or maybe just got the color number wrong.  The Pashmina didn’t arrive yet, so we have that to look forward to, but if you would like to try their very yummy Tosh Sock, we have many wonderful colors and I think this first shipment will sell out quickly.

We’ll be closed next Sunday May 30 for Memorial Day.  That’s all the important news.  There’s a problem uploading photos to the new blog site, so until I figure that out, that’s it for now.

See you soon…

Did I Say No Sweaters in May?

Friday, May 21st, 2010

Well, if I did, I lied.  I visited my sister over the weekend and since we sit around and talk and watch movies and talk some more, I need something to do with my hands that I don’t need my eyes for and I don’t want to be checking a pattern all the time.  So I started a Featherweight Cardigan from Hannah Fettig which you can see on her blog here.  Frankly I was waiting for my shipment from MadelineTosh to arrive before I started it, but it didn’t come in time, so I’m doing it in Zauberball lace, a non-repeating self-striping yarn.  It’s working so far because it’s a top-down raglan design.  The sleeves won’t match, however, and I’m not sure whether that will bother me or not.  I hope I remember to show it to you when it’s done – I know I lose track from one week to the next and who knows what appears here and what just shows up at the shop?

Anyway, I’m thrilled because MadTosh shipped from Texas last week and should arrive sometime this week.   I have 10 colors of Tosh Sock coming – it’s 100% superwash merino, 395 yards in a skein, which means it’s fairly heavy for a fingering weight yarn and should make a nice squishy sock.  I have 4 colors of Prairie coming, which is Tosh Sock in a lace weight, 840 yd in a skein.  And I have 5 colors of Pashmina coming, a sport-DK weight machine washable blend of merino wool, silk, and cashmere.  That’s it, and just 2 skeins of each.  I wanted to see a large selection of colorways, check the different yarns, see what their delivery and service were like, and if we like them, there will be more to come.  I hope you’ll get a chance to see them before Janet buys them all.  In fact, she should probably have a 24-hour cooling-off period.  I will be ordering again in about 2 weeks when the rep calls again so if you decide you want another yarn or colorway, I can group it with my stock order.  Minimum special order is 2 skeins of each yarn in a single colorway. Just realize it’s about an 8 week delivery!

I also hope you all had a nice Mother’s Day.  To everyone who is lucky enough to still have your mother or to be a mother, congratulations!

See you soon!
