One Hundred Twelve Pounds of Yarn

Sunday, June 6th, 2010

I just have to laugh at myself sometimes.  Some of my distributors sign  up to have UPS send notifications of deliveries, and I got one yesterday saying that Berroco has sent me 112 lb of yarn that will be delivered on Wednesday.  This is just the first of many such deliveries, but doesn’t the idea of 112 lb. of new and beautiful yarn just make you happy?  Would you think I would get a little jaded and say, “Oh, new yarn, ho-hum.”  Doesn’t happen – I can’t wait to see it, touch it, and plan for it, just like you do when you come in.

Plus, this next week is when I would normally be going to TNNA in Columbus, which I’m not going to this year, and I’m feeling a little left out, so new yarn will assuage my regrets.  If you ask me why I’m not going, I won’t be able to tell you.  It’s all mixed up with trying to control my inventory and expenses a little bit (we’ll just see how that works out.  I don’t know about you, but I tend to shop for yarn when I feel a little down, so this could backfire…)  and not wanting my poor old Geordie to have to go to a kennel, and a bunch of other things.  All good reasons for skipping one year but I still want to whine just a little bit.

This week brought Pashmina from MadelineTosh:

It’s oh-so-soft and luscious, with merino, silk, and cashmere in a sport weight.  It feels to me like Fleece Artist’s Casbah, but dyed in these wonderful, wearable colors that draw you into their depths until you see so many facets that you just aren’t sure what color you’re looking at anymore.

Did I mention we had a Frequent Buyer drawing?  It had been so long I decided to do several prizes.  Dianne Hershey won the $50 gift certificate and Martha Van Kouwenburg and Sandy Yarnall both won Claudia Handpaints French Scarf Kits.  Thanks to all my Frequent Buyers and good luck next time.

Barbara Huffert breezed in last week with this beautiful aran sweater, done in Classic Elite’s Montera.  It’s just gorgeous and so skillfully done.  The design is from Alice Starmore’s Fishermen’s Knits and Barbara can’t wait to embark on the next one.  You can see more (and better) photos on her blog  “Random Thoughts”

This detail show the wonderful texture added by the Montera that in my opinion just enhances the wonderful knitting!

More to say, but time to open!

See you soon…

MadTosh I

I’m posting from the store on my new computer and I hope to be able to do this from now on.  Everything is new and a little awkward but will get easier and more natural in time so bear with me if I seem a little stiff.

Here’s what was left of our first shipment of Madeline Tosh on Saturday morning:

Now, one of our favorite customers did some damage to this lot Sat. afternoon, but there are still good colors left.  It’s lovely yarn and although I haven’t had a chance to work with it yet, I know it will make lovely socks and scarves.  Pashmina is due to be delivered tomorrow – it’s (as the name implies) a cashmere blend and I can’t wait to see what that’s like.

I’ve been working on a scarf in Mirasol K’acha, a wool/silk/alpaca blend in hand-dyed semi-solids.  It’s beautiful and it’s our yarn of the week, which means it’s incredibly on sale.  You’ll get an email with details if I can figure out how to do that from this computer.  (We’ve got to keep learning new things, right?  We don’t want our brains to go stale!  Even though I just want to go home and knit!)

I’ve also been knitting other little things, which I’ll show when they’re done, and a cute little jacket in Elsebeth Lavold’s Baby Llama.  It’s boxy but drapey, so it’s flattering despite the lack of shape.  I love it!  I modified the pattern to do it in one piece and at the gauge that I thought would give a nice fabric.  Here’s a photo of the edging and I hope I’ll have a picture of it on a body soon!

Cheryl Condrath finished her pretty baby blanket.  She did a wonderful job on it and we’re so proud of her. She has just started her first garment and is making wonderful progress.  Just a reminder, this is a free pattern at the shop:

Carol Whitcraft is still knitting like crazy for her first great-grand.  Since she doesn’t know what the gender is, she’s doing what any (thrilled and overeager) knitter would do: she’s knitting for each sex!  A couple of boy things, then a couple of girl things, then something in neutrals…If there were triplets, she’d still be prepared!  Here’s her latest set:

Janet’s on vacation this week, driving through the Midwest.  Before she left, of course, she got all her projects lined up.  She’ll have hours and hours of car knitting – I can’t wait to see what she’ll have done by the time she gets home.

Don’t forget our pattern book sale this month.  Lots of great design collections on sale for almost nothing, way below cost.  I need room for the new stuff, people!  Just because I have approximately a ton of patterns and books already does not, for some reason, mean that I’m about to quit buying more!

Okay, let’s see if this works.  I’m hoping to do more frequent but shorter posts from the store.  Here goes!
