A Blue Post

Monday, July 12th, 2010

I really mean the color blue, not the mood.  You’ll notice a definite tendency toward blue in all the photos in this post.

Najma Iqbal modeled this linen vest for me – she was dressed in the perfect colors so I trapped her!  Karen Wenrich knit this for us months ago, but it took me a long time to write the pattern, which you wouldn’t think would take so much since it’s such a simple piece, but I was on to other things for a while.  She knit it in Claudia Handpaints Linen – beautiful colors! – and I think it would also look wonderful in Hempathy.  I love it as a casual layering piece for summer.  The pattern will be free with purchase of yarn to make it.

Najma ambushed into modeling!

Karen Walter finished this gorgeous lace “Apres Surf Hoodie”, done in Brown Sheep’s Cotton Fine, from Interweave Knits Summer 08.  Doesn’t she look wonderful in it?

Just yummy!

And Donna Guthrie made this cushy cowl from Mountain Colors’ River Twist and 2 colors of Plymouth Galway, from a free Lion Brand pattern.  (Sorry, don’t have a link.)  We’ll be scheduling a class for this soon:

As a neckwarmer

As a hood

It’s lovely and Donna says it’s quick to make (if you get up at 4 every morning to get a couple of hours of knitting in before you start your day, as Donna does.)

I’m still working on my gorgeous wrap and really just enjoying every single stitch. Here’s what’s been happening:

45 of these little guys

15 of these (each one picked up from 3 little guys)

5 of these (each one picked up from 3 of the medium guys)

I’m on the third big fella, two more to go, then I’ll pick up from all 5 of them to make the central piece.  Do you know the feeling when your knitting is just flowing and the yarn is beautiful and the end result will be lovely?  That’s the zen of knitting and I’m definitely in that space with this project.  Someone asked did I think anyone else would want to make it, and I replied that some things just have to be knit.  Just for the simple love of it!

See you soon…wear blue!

and wonderful to knit with.

Slow Day at the Shop

Friday, July 2nd, 2010

Today is a typical summer day at a yarn shop – just what you expect when you’ve been in business for a few years, and even look forward to in the busy winter months. I can knit a little, straighten the shelves a little, plan a little, sell a little yarn, make a few calls and basically just slow my pace a bit.  This is the first one we’ve had this summer! May I just say thanks to you all for not giving me too many of them?

However, I am enjoying myself, working on these little motifs

Morganite motifs

which are the first building blocks for this gorgeous wrap from Norah Gaughan’s collection for Berroco this season.  I’m making it in Fresco, a wonderful sportweight blend of wool, baby alpaca and angora.  It’s from Classic Elite and comes in a spectacular array of colors, has good stitch definition (a nice sturdy twist makes sure of this), good drape (baby alpaca) and a pretty little bit of fuzz (angora) – not  much, thank goodness, or I’d be sneezing.

Anyhoo, you make 45 (!!) of these little thingies, then pick up from 3 of them to make the next size motif, and continue to build your wrap in that manner.  I seem to be fascinated this summer with big, big projects on little, little yarn.  Luckily I can break up the big projects with the quick Yarn of the Week things.  I’m having such a fun knitting summer – hope you are too!

Happy 4th…

Trish
