Glossary:
RS= right side (public side of garment)
WS= wrong side (inside garment)
K2tog = knit two stitches together
Sl1 wyif = Slip 1 stitch from left needle to right
needle as if to purl with yarn in front
SSK = Slip next two stitches separately to right needle as if to knit, insert tip of left needle into front of both stitches and knit them together.
3-needle bindoff = In your left hand, hold stitches from pieces to be joined on 2 parallel needles, with points facing same direction and the right sides of both pieces together. Use a third needle to knit one stitch from each needle together. Do this again, then pull the first stitch on the third needle over the second stitch, and off the tip of the needle. (One stitch bound off.) Repeat across row.
Stitches Used:
Stockinette Stitch: Knit on right side, purl on wrong side
Lace Rib Pattern: (Multiple of 4 stitches plus 2)
Every Row: Sl1 wyif (edge stitch), *k2, yo, k2tog; repeat from *, end with k1.
Back:
With larger needles, cast on 86/94/106/114 st. Work in Lace Rib for 10 inches. Change to smaller needles and work in stockinette stitch for 2 (2/2/3) inches, ending by working a WS row.
Shape armholes:
Bind off 5 (6/7/8) sts at beginning of next 2 rows, then bind off 3 sts at beginning of following 2 rows. Working decreases as follows: [K1, SSK, k to last 3 st, k2tog, k1], decrease every RS row 3 (3/4/6) times. You'll have 64 (70/78/80) sts.
Work straight in stockinette stitch until armhole measures 7.5 (8/8.5/9) inches from first bindoff row. Put all stitches on hold.
Front:
Work as for back until armholes measure 2.5 (3/3.5/4) inches from first bindoff row, ending with a WS row.
Shape left neck & shoulder:
K24 (27/31/32) sts and turn, leaving remaining stitches on hold.
Next row:(WS) Bind off 2 st, purl to end.
Knit 1 row.
Repeat the last 2 rows 1 (1/2/2) more time(s). 20 (23/25/26) sts remain.
Purl 1 row.
Next row: (RS) Knit to 3 sts before neck edge, k2tog, k1.
Repeat the last 2 rows 3 (4/5/5) more times. 16 (18/19/20) sts remain.
Continue to work stockinette stitch without decreasing until same length as back. Put sts on hold.
Shape right neck edge & shoulder:
With RS facing, re-join yarn and bind off 16 sts. Knit to end. 24 (27/31/32 sts)
Purl 1 row.
Next row: (RS) Bind off 2 st, knit to end.
Repeat last 2 rows 1 (1/2/2) more time(s). 20 (23/25/26) sts remain.
Purl 1 row.
Next row (RS): K1, SSK, knit to end.
Repeat last 2 rows 3 (4/5/5) more times. 16 (18/19/20) sts remain.
Join shoulders:
Slip all back stitches onto the short circular needle. With RS together, use 3-needle bindoff to join 16 (18/19/20) st at one shoulder. Bind off 32 (34/40/40) back neck sts in the normal fashion, then use 3-needle bindoff to join second shoulder.
Finishing:
Sew side seams using mattress stitch. BE SURE NOT TO PULL SEAM TIGHTLY ON LACE SECTION to allow for drape.
Armhole & neckline borders:
With small circular needle, pick up and knit 1 st in each bound-off stitch and 2 sts in every 3 rows of sloped or vertical sections. Exact numbers don't matter but be sure to not to pick up into loose spaces. Purl one round and bind off firmly in purl.
Weave in ends.
